Vera

24th September 2012

'Vera chapter one' was one of my favourite finds from London Design festival last year so I was more than delighted when Liliana Ovalle one of this years design contributors sent me an invite Vera Chapter two during this years London Design Festival.

Vera is a project that has stemmed from a series of family photographs found in a second hand shop in Brighton. Inspired by the fictional story that could be told from the visual clues in the pictures and the story they suggest, has led to the muse known as Vera.

Each chapter expands on the fictional biography about her life and the outcome is a series of objects and stories that depict her experiences.
Orchestrated by Kirsty Minns and Érika Muller (KM & ÉM) this second chapter brings together a series of designers who have all responded to one of the photos in order to expand the materiality of Vera's world. The photo they responded to shows Vera aged seven on a bright sunny day holding a stick of candy floss on the beach front.

With 8 contributors all putting their very personal views on Vera's day at the beach the outcome is beautiful and provoking.

Liliana Ovalle writes a story of Vera's day exploring her experiences and of seeing a man at the beach with a series of boxes that he seemed to make the contents of disappear. A touch of magic, Liliana's boxes made of oak and corian explore a visual tactility through the eyes of Vera.

StudyOportable designed a sand timer that takes its shape from elements found in the picture such as the candy floss and the clouds. All of the captured shapes similarly offer an ephemeral quality that we try to capture in photographs. The sand timer is also a comment on the idea that as in the photograph, time is frozen and captured forever.
