Material Alchemy

4th November 2014

I am pleased to announce that a new book exploring materality and materiologists in the 21st century is available to pre order now.

Having written the ‘Forward’ and directed the ‘Trend Forecasting’ Section on behalf of Unique Style Platform, this interactive book is a rich compendium of synthetic biology, 3D printing, Molecular Gastronomy and future materials.

Titled Material Alchemy the book explores the most innovative and thought provoking approaches to materials showcasing the designers and materiologists who are shaping our materials future. Exploring all the key topics surrounding materials design, the book considers materials through the lens of: ‘Low-Tech’, ‘High-Tech’, ‘Molecular Gastronomy’ and ‘The Laboratory’.

Authored by Jenny Lee from Studio Aikeiu what sets this book apart is its future view of how materials are changing the way that we design and engage in the now and near future.

With a layered digital experience the book has an accompanying app from technologists and friends of Studio Aikieu and Unique Style Platform imactivate bridging the physical and digital divide.

It also has a Trend Forecasting section from Unique Style Platform showing the importance of materials within trends for fashion, packaging and design generally.

Including designers such as Studio Fludd, Lucy McRae, Sophie Rowley, Thomas Vailly, Marlene Huissoud , Clemens Winkler and Formafantasma it is a treasure trove of materials design and will be published in the new year by BIS.
