Future Lighting

21st April 2012

Having just returned from a very wet and rather lack lustre Milan Furniture fair here is one of my favourite projects from the week.

Shown at Spazio Rossana Orlandi - the ultimate location for a bit of Italian chic and fantastic design - booo studio presented a collection of innovative lightbulbs by Front Design, Nacho Carbonell and Formafantasma.

Booo Studio's aim is to bridge the gap between experimental limited edition pieces and mass production. Working with LED lighting technology each of the designers created a lamp where the lamp itself was also the lightbulb.

Swedish studio Front developed 'surface tension lamp' and 'lampshade bulb', taking inspiration from the long life of an LED bulb. Using bubbles which are blown and grow and in the end drop or pop. The results is a beautiful lamp that is constantly changing in colour, shape and luminosity and will adapt and morph into over 3 million different shapes during the lifetime of an LED light bulb.
