Flax Project

28th March 2012

Best known for her Pig 05049 and One Sheep Sweater projects Christien Meindertsma's latest project Flax started when she was commissioned by Thomas Eyck in 2009 to make some ropes.

Collaborating with a farmer, sowing and consequently harvesting flax, the project culminated in Autumn 2011 with simple and raw products such as lamps and electric cables.

Made in collaboration with traditional ropemakers and wood workers she has used art and craft and has focused on the essence of the material in order to celebrate and understand it.

Historically one of the most important textile fibres in Holland, it was transformed into all kinds of textiles, but latterly it is farmed in smaller quantities and mostly shipped to China. True to her methodology Meindertsma has made a series of products from Flax that have been grown and produced locally from seed to end product.

The project is also accompanied by a series of films exploring the processes required from seed through to refined material.

I use this blog as a notebook of inspirations – I post things I see and like and thoughts of mine. I don't revolve around a singular topic and neither does this blog. Everything and anything is relevant
