A textile future

14th June 2012

Today was the press and VIP viewing of the Textile Futures Ma course at Central St Martins in the new Kingscross building. Having gone from strength to strength over the last decade or so the course was given the pride of place in the main gallery space at the entrance of the building, unlike other courses that required navigating your way around the building.

Putting itself on a global perspective in parallel with the infamous Fashion Ma the Textile Futures alumni are making waves in the design, science and technology arena having gone to companies such as Nokia, EDF and Nissan to name a few. Interestingly, few go back into the fashion or textiles industry after their 2 years experience that opens their eyes to the bigger picture of the design concerns we face living in the 21st Century.

The 23 graduating students explored areas defined under the following headings - Probing futures, Poetic intention, Design interactions, Resilient design and future craft. Looking to biological, environmental and technological futures their outcomes are at times poetic and thoughtful whilst being based on the considerations of what life throws at us and our planet in the 21st century.

Here is a quick snapshot with more indepth to follow. The show is open for the next few days for those of you in London.

I use this blog as a notebook of inspirations – I post things I see and like and thoughts of mine. I don't revolve around a singular topic and neither does this blog. Everything and anything is relevant
