From Creatures

30th May 2013

There are a lot of designers, architects and restaurants that are going back to nature and exploring nature in new ways, but taking a really fresh approach to nature, sustainability and design is Moe Nagata who is soon to graduate from the Textiles Futures Ma.

I first blogged about her project in May when she was first revealing her project at her work in progress show. It has moved on incredibly since then and has taken a very different aesthetic turn which is incredibly sophisticated and unexpected.

Her project was inspired by ancient tribal based craft design that was rooted in animism and a symbiotic relationship with nature. Traditional tribes hunted for food and then used every last piece of the animal to make products such as teeth necklaces.

Nagata has taken that consideration into a very modern look with her From Creatures collection that uses the natural materials discarded from the fishing industry. Using shells and bones she has given them a surprising twist using laser cutting, dyeing and printing.

Looking for an intern!!

29th May 2013

We are looking for an intern to come and work in the London based studio for 2 months from the last week of August. We have a materials focused making project so are looking for someone with a curious mind and a creative hand.

You will have a great opportunity to work with a team of materials designers and trend forecasters on a series of projects for international clients.

The internship is unpaid so we are able to be flexible with part time working.

Any questions or to register your interest please send an e mail to philippa@philippawagner.co.uk

The Sentient Mind

29th May 2013

I love the work of film maker and futurist Jason Silver and am particularly taken with his latest video exploring the idea of the sentient mind and the inner self as well as the speculation of the emergence of consciousness that leads to exploring the voice in our heads.

Shown during the PSFK conference, titled The Mirroring Mind he continues to explore big ideas of our existence through his energetic poetic films that are his trademark. His latest film yet again brings a fresh perspective on how we view ourselves and our world in this digital era.

Connected Earth

21st May 2013

Satu Maaranen is the fashion designer of the moment having just won the Premiere Vision grand jury prize at this year Hyeres Festival.

Using sand and sawdust mixed into prints on her fabrics she explores a raw kind of tactility.

Her collection called 'Garment in Landscape' explores whether it is possible to wear nature as clothing and is totally in tune with everything connected to the earth that I am feeling at the moment.

For Stylesight subscribers, have a read of the latest InTheAir report Connected Nature which delves further into the latest trend of how we are reconnecting with our Earth and nature.

Embossed

20th May 2013

For some reason the CSM MA fashion show during fashion week fell off my radar and its only now that I am finding time to appreciate some of the brilliant collections.

Sadie Williams' sci-fi inspired collection exploring embossed metallic materials was just breathtaking. Using a technique she had developed herself her garments have a refined embossed texture created by layering three materials together and bonding them with geometric indents resulting in a refined tactility.
