False Geology

29th January 2013

Yesenia Thibault-picazo one of the most interesting students on the Textile Futures Ma is exploring a future whereby our natural history is no longer as we know it. As we deplete resources on our planet and as industry and infrastructure is transforming our landscapes we are changing Earth for ever.

Exploring the idea that we are now living through a geological epoch known as the Anthropocene, a time where man and nature become one and we begin to re consider artificial and natural and what it means in our future she explores the idea of future fossils.

Speculating that future fossils and future 'natural' materials will be manufactured from materials that are characteristic of our industrialised times, her project asks how we will envision the future of geology and of fossils and asks how will our ancestors experience our time and history through the raw materials that they will be mining in the future?

3D collaboration

28th January 2013

Iris Van Herpen has been changing the face of fashion and couture for the past few seasons and this season she collaborated with the brilliant Neri Oxman who leads the Mediated Matter group at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Working with both hard and soft materials that are still 3D printed the resulting skirt and cape appear as a kind of fluid armour.

Oxman's work explores the mythical and the role of design through the medium of rapid prototyping and is truly awe inspiring in its own right, but this collaboration has brought together two truly unique talents in this field.

Material Animism

22nd January 2013

Taking inspiration from ancient tribes who believe in animism and that in using an animal for food or skin that nothing should be wasted, Moe Nagata's “From Creatures” shown during the recent CSM textile Futures work in progress show celebrates discarded shells and bones from fish and crustaceans for accessories.

Commenting on issues surrounding over consumption as well as celebrating all parts of the animal she delicately and beautifully breathes new life through her laser cutting and patterning, transforming the materials into a new preciousness.

Faceted Fashion

21st January 2013

It is always a pleasure to see the latest collection from Icelandic Fashion designer Sruli Recht and his Autumn Winter 2013 menswear collection does not disappoint.

Always exploring materiality in new and unique ways he has this season collaborated with Elisa Strozyk, an alumni of the Textile Futures Ma at Central St Martins who is well known for her wooden textiles.

In addition he has used reindeer skin and unraveled skeins of wool and pushing the boundaries of materiality further than he has before, he has made a ring that is crafted from a specially grafted piece of skin from around his belly button.

RCA School of materials

20th January 2013

This week was the first in the series of work in progress shows at the RCA. Having been re shuffled into new schools the students - both first and second years- are showing their work mixed up between those disciplines within the new schools.

First was the School of materials that includes Fashion and Textiles and ceramics as well as jewelery.

As usual there were some beautiful pieces shown with an overall very polished look. There was not any one project that stood out - I am hoping the school of design will do that for me as it will be product design and design interactions showing then.

Here are a few students who's work caught my eye. I particularly like the happiness brooch that grows with the more happy people are from Hollie Paxton.
