Encoded Textiles

10th May 2012

Shown during the dutch invertuals 'retouched' exhibition during milan design week - an evolution of the fantastic show 'untouchables' shown during Dutch design week last year, Studio Raw Color showed their latest project.

Exploring the idea that there is a constant 'conversation' floating around in the digital space in e mails and text messages, they have developed a cryptographer which generates pattern based on words which have been translated into a code.

A continuation of their experimentation from the Anti Printer shown during the FLOW exhibition in 2010 during Dutch Design week, bleach is applied to a textile from a pen which is attached to the print head of the cryptographer.

The 'written' icons are actually encoded from each texted or e mailed character and the result in an ever changing pattern dependent on the text input. In addition they have used different dye stuff that reacts to the bleach in different ways resulting in varying shades and unique patterns.

Alchemic Thermophores

8th May 2012

Shown during the Transnatural exhibition within MOST - Tom Dixons new location for Milan design week, Tim Van Cromvoirt's Thermophore made from iron fillings and thermochormic inks was mesmerisingly beautiful and taps into my love for anything alchemic right now.

Another Terra

4th May 2012

Taking inspiration from the finding of Kepler-22b, the IN Residence, Another Terra - Home away from home exhibition shown during Milan design week poses a time when we have to leave earth for another more hospitable planet.

A collective exhibition including the likes of Formafantasma, Minale-Maeda and Mischer'Traxler it showed their ideas on this new frontier in space travel.

Asked, "If you had to envisage life on some other habitable planet other than Earth, what kind of minimal hand luggage would you take with you?", the results consisted of a series of objects in wooden suitcases such as next life tool kits, glow in the dark eggs and a nature tool box from Minale-Maeda.

The most outstanding piece was a beautiful hand woven space quilt from Lanzavecchia + Wai studio. Highlighting the objects experienced in a normal day (on earth),strips of golden mylar have been hand stamped repeatedly with the names of the objects offering a glimpse at the mundane day to day life that may become revered with the changes of life on another planet.

Kepler-22b

Kepler-22b

3rd May 2012

With the discovery of Kepler-22b, a planet that orbits around a star similar to the sun over 600 light years away has led to the aesthetics of planets being hot again. With the space race firmly back on to find an alternative habitable planet to our own, space is of key importance again.

I love this film by Glintstudio. Titled 'Another Earth Promo' it tells a story of another planet coming alongside ours.
